Experts Reveal Easy Habits to Protect Your Eyes from Screen Time

Excessive Screen Time May Harm Your Eyes and Sleep, Say Experts One Screen to Another Doesn't Give Your Eyes Real Rest New Delhi: In today's digital world, many people spend long hours working on computers and then switch to smartphones or tablets for entertainment. Health experts warn that moving from one screen to another does not provide real rest for the eyes. Instead, prolonged exposure to digital devices can lead to eye strain, headaches, dry eyes, poor sleep quality, and mental fatigue. According to experts, constantly focusing on screens forces the eye muscles to remain fixed at the same distance for extended periods. Over time, this may cause eye discomfort, burning sensations, blurred vision, dryness, and difficulty concentrating.   Screen Time Can Affect Sleep Quality Experts say darkness naturally signals the brain that it is time to sleep. During the evening, the body produces melatonin, a hormone that regulates the sleep cycle. However, excessive use of smartphones, laptops, and tablets before bedtime may interfere with melatonin production, making it harder to fall asleep and reducing overall sleep quality. While features such as Night Mode or Blue Light Filters may reduce screen brightness, they do not eliminate the mental stimulation caused by notifications, videos, social media, and digital content.   What Causes Digital Eye Strain? Health professionals identify several common causes of digital eye strain, including: Looking at screens for long periods without breaks. Reduced blinking while using digital devices. Poor sitting posture. Screen glare and excessive brightness. Holding mobile phones too close to the eyes. Working continuously without resting the eyes. Follow the 20-20-20 Rule One of the simplest ways to reduce eye strain is by following the 20-20-20 Rule. Every 20 minutes, look at an object at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This simple exercise relaxes the eye muscles and reduces continuous visual stress. Experts also recommend Palming, a relaxation technique in which you gently rub your palms together until warm, close your eyes, and place your palms lightly over them without applying pressure. This helps your eyes relax in darkness and warmth.   Simple Habits for Healthier Eyes Experts recommend adopting these healthy habits: Stop using your phone at least one hour before bedtime. Keep your smartphone away from your bed while sleeping. Reduce unnecessary notifications during the evening. Use warm lighting instead of bright lights at night. Blink frequently while working on a computer. Keep digital devices at a comfortable viewing distance. Spend some time outdoors in natural sunlight every morning. If evening screen work is unavoidable, blue-light-blocking glasses may help reduce discomfort, but experts stress that they should not be seen as a substitute for limiting screen time.   Healthy Diet Supports Better Vision A balanced diet also plays an important role in maintaining eye health. Foods rich in Vitamin A, Omega-3 fatty acids, and Lutein, such as carrots, spinach, walnuts, flaxseeds, eggs, and colorful vegetables, can help support healthy vision. Drinking enough water throughout the day also helps prevent dry eyes.   Children Need Special Attention Experts advise parents to limit recreational screen time for children. Since children's brains, eyesight, and sleep patterns are still developing, excessive exposure to screens may affect concentration, learning, sleep quality, and overall development.   Healthy Eyes Need Real Rest Experts emphasize that healthy eyes require more than screen filters or special glasses. Regular breaks, frequent blinking, proper sleep, good nutrition, adequate hydration, and reducing unnecessary screen use are the most effective ways to protect vision in the long run. By making a few simple lifestyle changes, people can significantly reduce digital eye strain and maintain healthier eyesight for years to come.

BJP's New Strategy: Win Hyderabad First, Then Target the Assembly

Hyderabad: With the aim of strengthening its presence in Telangana, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its organizational efforts under the guidance of the central leadership. The party is treating the upcoming Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections as a crucial political battle, believing that establishing a strong base in Hyderabad will pave the way for success in the next Telangana Assembly elections. As part of this strategy, BJP National President Nitin Nabin is scheduled to visit Telangana for a three-day tour. During his visit, Nitin Nabin will hold a special meeting with GHMC booth-level committee leaders this evening. He is expected to provide guidance on key aspects of election management, booth-level organization, campaign strategy, and candidate selection. Party leaders will also review the shortcomings observed in recent local elections and discuss measures to strengthen the BJP's grassroots network ahead of the upcoming polls. The BJP's immediate objective is to secure victories in the three municipal corporations. The party has already decided to contest the elections independently, without entering into any alliance. Nitin Nabin is expected to advise state leaders to establish a dedicated selection committee to identify strong candidates and ensure that the party fields capable contenders in every division. In addition, the BJP leadership is likely to emphasize the importance of voter list verification, new voter enrollment, booth-level management, and continuous engagement with voters. The party believes that a strong performance in the GHMC elections will significantly enhance its political influence in Telangana and strengthen its prospects of achieving success in the forthcoming Assembly elections.
